A card should be seen in the same way as cash, so it should be treated in the same way as any other valuable. Some basic rules for safe handling of cards:
1. General
- When you receive your card, sign it immediately, since only a signed card is valid. Destroy the old, invalid or cancelled card by cutting it up.
- Do not keep your card in the sun or near other sources of heat, electromagnetic radiation and or other harmful sources.
- Handle your card with care, always keep it on you; do not leave it in a car, a locker… When you pay with your card, never let it out of sight.Commit your PIN number for your card to memory when you receive it and destroy the envelope in which it came.
- If you cannot remember your PIN number, do not carry it around together with your card. At home, your PIN number should not be kept together with your card.
- Your card is personal, no one except you may use it to effect any service.
2. Purchase with the card
- Your personal identification number (PIN) is intended for cash withdrawal from ATMs and for shopping. Your card number, especially its pertaining data: PIN, date of validity, CVC2 code (three digit number recorded on the signature band on the reverse of the card) are confidential and unique, so do not disclose them to anybody who asks about them.
- You are advised that prior to signing the slip, you check the amount of payment to be confirmed by your signature.
- Slips of past purchases usually contain your card data, so destroy your old slips so that no other person can discover important data about your card.
- Before throwing away your purchase slips, closely check all use reports. Only by comparison of the use report and the purchase slip can you discover your actual use.
- You are advised not to sign slips at sales points, which are not intended for prompt payment of goods or services and are issued with prewritten dates or even void.
3. Internet purchase
On internet pages, do not fill in your number anywhere except when you have decided on the purchase and wish to pay by card. Only pay providers through the internet who you know to be reliable and who have provided at least minimal security settings on their web pages.
4. ATM use
- When you execute any transaction (particularly when you use an ATM) take care that nobody sees you type your PIN number you typed. If anybody is standing too close, ask him/her to move away.
- Use terminals (particularly ATMs) by yourself. If you can't use them, do not accept assistance fromany passer by. Get information on how to use it at your bank.
- Use your card only at machines (particularly ATMs) located in a frequented, well lit spot.
- If you notice any deviations from normal functioning at an ATM in Slovenia (for example it is harder to insert your card in the ATM; there are devices or items on the ATM which are not usually there; cameras, unusually installed; the slot in which your card must be inserted is unusual…), take your card, leave the ATM and use another one. You are kindly asked promptly to report such an event to the bank, on the telephone number written on your card and/or operational-communication centre (police) at telephone number 113.
- If ATMs are installed in rooms through which you can only enter with your card, never type your PIN. If there is a device at the door requesting you to type your PIN, do not do it.
5. Cancellation, loss, theft
- Note down the telephone number you received from your card issuer, which you can call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and report your card loss or theft. Naturally, report promptly, so that your card can be blocked for your safety.
- If you suspect that your card has been stolen, report it to the nearest police station.
- Do not believe electronic, telephone or other messages informing you of an abuse of your card and inviting you to provide your card data or to connect through hypertext link to a »securtiy form« and there to enter certain personal data, including your card personal identification numbers.
